The Earth is not ours alone, not our personal possession. We are just a passing phase, taking care of it for a while and then moving on. The problem is, we’re not really taking care of it like we should. There can be no future for the human race, if the current generation destroys the only habitable planet in the universe.
Future generations, if any survive, will never forgive us for out irresponsible handling of their home planet. We have a choice about the kind of planet we will leave on. The earth on which we stand, the air that we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink is a result of our conscious choices. It would be wise of us to stop trying to tranform all that is natural and pure into something that is man-made and poisonous or destructive. We should just gratefully accept what has been bestowed upon us, instead of trying to change everything to make our lives easier.
It’s time that we protect it from our own greed and ambition and all else. It’s time that we preserve the magnificence of the mountains and the serenity of the valleys. The Creator has made our life simple; it is we who complicate it and ruin things to make it all better again. Some of us are arrogant enough to think that the Earth was made solely for our benefit. Many more creatures of creation inhabit this planet, and it would be imprudent not to watch out for their well-being as well. Today I feel man has become the biggest predator the world has ever seen.
On this momentous occasion, let’s get together and pray to, and for, our splendid, life-giving Earth –
‘May our world be always filled with an abundance of edible food, drinkable water, clean air, clothing and shelter. May its life-energy always flow through us. May there be enough plants and trees, birds and bees, fruits and flowers for those that come after us. May it always protect us from ourselves. And may the Sun always shine on us all.
Today, let us be reconnect with nature or there may come a day when the only bird our children will ever see is one in a pet shop, and the only tree he lays his hands on will be the plastic one at the mall. Let each heart, each human being be connected to one another in thier efforts to save the world. Let every day be ‘Earth Day’.
