Events and Occassions

Hello! Wish for a pleasant and happy day ahead for all my friends across the world. Showing gratitude and appreciation to my loved ones, is how I begin my day and encourage all of you to do the same. Today, the 17th of April is just another day of the week for most of us. However, this day does hold great significance, as it is observed as the World Haemophilia Day. Haemophilia, also known as hemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder, which stops the blood from clotting in a proper manner. The World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) has been observing this day, since the year 1989, in honour of the birth anniversary of its founder Frank Schnabel.

All important meetings, events and occasions like engagements or the starting of a new venture is scheduled to take place, exactly on this day. This day is called and celebrated as Gudi Padwa in our Maharashtra. It is the beginning of the New Hindu Calendar, starting with the month Chaitra. Thus, it is also known as Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Friends, as we Indian believe in unity in diversity, the thought is extended to Gudi Padwa too. I get together with my Maharastrian friends and neighbor, and along with them, welcome the New Year with an auspicious early morning Puja and loads of sweets.

Hello friends, warm and pleasant wishes to everyone for the day. Let’s start with a small quiz today. Does the name ‘SS Loyalty’, ring a bell? Well, if it does then I’m impressed. And if it does not, I wouldn’t blame you. This is the name of the ship owned by Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd. that voyaged to the United Kingdom on the 5th of April in 1919. Thus, carving out a landmark episode in Indian history. This was the first step in the navigation history of our nation, following which National Maritime Day has been observed every year on 5th April since 1964.

Such a fun-filled start it has been to the week, hasn’t it? The pranks people played on April Fools’ Day, is something I have always loved. The fun and laughter that surrounds this day should be inculcated everyday. Wouldn’t the world be a happier place then?

Holi is considered as the festival of colours. The theme surrounding the festival propagates peace and fosters friendships. It has a strong mythological connection, as is the case with major festivals in India. Legendary stories of Radha and Krishna, Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap, Lord Shiva and Kaamadeva and many more, are related to the festival of Holi. Nowadays, the festival of Holi is turning unholy because of few people who either don’t know how to play Holi or look at it as a tool to vandalise.

As you are reading this, some executive in some part of the world is busy analysing the weather conditions and climatic patterns of our planet. End of 2012 was supposed to be the end of the world. Fortunately, we survived it, but the question remains, till when? The decade, which ended in the year 2010, was the warmest since 1850. 2007 was the hottest year on record. 75% of natural disasters are caused due to the severe changes in weather, climate and water related incidents. Whether there are major disasters like cyclones, droughts, floods or minor illnesses, they are attributed to meteorological issues.

This world was created as one; we drew lines on it and created borders. We were created as humans, as equals, but we were engaged in a race to determine the first among equals. There are two ways to be strong, either work hard and raise yourself or suppress others and prove your superiority. History tells us that the second option was the one preferred by our ancestors. We being the descendants of the same ancestors are continuing to choose the second option of suppressing people rather than uplifting ourselves.
