What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is a term used to describe a special kind of fat that appears below the waistline in most women. It appears as dimpled skin caused by protrusion of subcutaneous fat which is caused by a combination of water, fat and toxins. These substances get trapped in the connective tissue between the muscle layer and the skin.
A large percentage of post adolescent females (approximately 85%) and even some males have cellulite. Women generally have a higher percentage of fat ( especially in the thigh and buttock areas ) than men do. It is seen mostly in women because of the differences in the way muscle fat and connective tissue are distributed in women and men. The connective tissue is surrounded by a network of fibers that gives a cushioning, protective effect to our muscles and organs. When fats and liquids are trapped in the epidermal layer (deep layer), the connective tissue hardens and thickens. This produces a dimpled effect or an orange peel effect. Cellulite formation is not necessarily seen only in obese women. It is sometimes seen in slim people too and is due to a structural network of fibers. In overweight people it is seen more prominently or is more pronounced.
Cellulite, unlike the fat layer that acts as an insulator, provides no such padding effect. It is mainly seen in areas like the hips, buttocks, thighs, abdomen and the breasts. Cellulite is comprised of fat and toxins and can affect women of any size or body structure. In short, it is the changes in the fat, connective tissue, blood flow and lymphatic drainage that contribute to the formation of cellulite. The root cause is the weakening of the connective tissue. By reducing the fat in your body, one can work towards reducing their appearance. Cellulite is a complex problem but not difficult to eliminate or arrest its formation.
Causes of cellulite formation:
1. Improper diet and poor eating habits result in the formation of cellulite. Regular intake of alcohol, fatty foods, sugary foods, caffeine, etc. are all causative factors.
2. Inadequate water intake. Adequate consumption of water (8-10 glasses a day) enables the body to flush out the toxins.
3. Tension, stress and smoking. Smoking causes constriction of the capillaries. Stress and tension promote toxic build up.
4. Sedentary lifestyle and absence of exercise in the daily routine.
5. Aging. Loss of skin tone due to reduced elasticity of the connective tissue.
Treatment:
There is no magical or quick fix solution for cellulite removal and there is no special diet that can guarantee cellulite removal. The best one can do is to improve your overall nutritional health and well being that will go a long way in detoxifying and cleansing your system which in turn will reduce the quantity and speed of fat storage.
Good nutrition plays an important role in attaining a cellulite free body. This can be achieved with a diet low in calories, high in fiber, and with moderate exercise that will help to reduce the underlying fat stores and replace lost muscle tissue. A healthy diet from a young age can go a long way in reducing the cellulite build up.
Follow these steps to help reduce or prevent cellulite formation:
1. Body fat increases depending on your lifestyle. So avoid processes foods, refined flours and canned foods which are high in sugar, fat and salt.
2. Follow a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, beans, legumes. These high fibre foods help to eliminate toxins and wastes. High fibre not only gives you bulk but also slows down the absorption process which in turn keeps your insulin levels steady.
3. Reduce the intake of alcohol, coffee, tea and cola drinks.
4. Drink plenty of water to assist your body in getting rid of toxins and waste materials.
5. Reduce salt consumption. Salt causes water retention.
6. Regular exercise regimen is very beneficial in fighting cellulite formation. Stretching exercises are excellent as they increase metabolism and blood circulation. A routine of cardio and weight training also help in burning fat and improving muscle tone. Aerobic exercises, jogging, walking, stair climbing, and swimming are highly recommended. Squats, leg lunges ( for the thighs and buttocks ), resistance training using tubes and bands also can result in reducing the dimpling appearance.
7. Have 5 – 6 small, frequent meals. This helps to keep your metabolic rate high.
8. Deep breathing exercises, yoga can also help arrest cellulite formation because of increased oxygen intake. Exercise enhances circulation, improves strength and flexibility & thus can help to arrest cellulite formation.
9. Massages are also beneficial as it stimulates circulation and promotes drainage of fluids.
10. Minimise alcohol consumption.
What is heartening to know is that cellulite is not a disease but a sign that your lifestyle is not healthy. The best way to treat it is through a combination of sensible diet and moderate lifestyle, regular exercise combined with some massages. These steps will ensure that you maintain your weight and keep your body in shape.
