How does Gatorade work?

Gatorade is formulated to rapidly replace the fluid, energy, and electrolytes lost during physical activity. Gatorade provides the optimal balance of carbohydrate, minerals, and water to assure rapid replenishment. Specifically, Gatorade works by:

  • Stimulating voluntary fluid intake to help keep active bodies well hydrated,
  • Speeding fluid absorption to assure that fluid, carbohydrates, and electrolytes enter the body rapidly,
  • Providing a source of carbohydrates that active muscles can use to work longer and harder,
  • Assuring rapid rehydration following exercise to help speed recovery.

What are electrolytes?

In Gatorade, the key electrolytes are the minerals sodium, potassium, and chloride.

Can I drink too much Gatorade?

No. In fact, the danger lies in not drinking enough Gatorade when we need it most -- during physical activity when sweating can rapidly cause dehydration. Our thirst mechanism usually prevents us from drinking too much of anything, including Gatorade.

What id the difference between Hydration, Dehydration & Rehydration?

All three terms refer to the fluid content of the body.

  • Hydration refers to the process of replacing fluids, as in "Drink plenty of Gatorade to assure good hydration."
  • Dehydration is the loss of body fluids through sweat, urine, or diarrhea. Dehydration occurs when our fluid intake falls short of our fluid losses.
  • Rehydration refers to replacing lost fluids, "Gatorade is a great beverage choice for rehydrating after exercise."

How much Gatorade can kids drink?

Kids can drink as much Gatorade as they want, provided that doing so doesn't interfere with achieving a balanced diet. Gatorade contains only about one-half the sugar (carbohydrate) content of fruit juices, regular soft drinks, and Kool Aid. And Gatorade is low in sodium. • Sodium helps maintain the desire to drink fluids so that dehydration is minimized,
  • Along with the carbohydrate in Gatorade, sodium stimulates rapid fluid absorption,
  • Sodium helps maintain proper distribution of fluid within the body,
  • Sodium helps assure rapid and complete rehydration following exercise.

Why not just drink water during exercise?

Water is a good beverage choice during physical activity, when nothing else is available. But water doesn't contain flavor, carbohydrates, or electrolytes, the stuff that makes Gatorade more effective than water at rehydrating, replenishing and refueling what active bodies need. There are lots of occasions when Gatorade is more effective than water. There is no occasion when water is more effective than Gatorade.
